Confirmation Class

Who: 6th graders and older who have not yet been confirmed

What: Confirmation class! What is Confirmation? Confirmation is both a journey and an event. First, it is a journey that our youth take as they claim their faith in God as their own. As children, their faith was instilled in them and fostered by their parents and/or guardians and their church family. During this Confirmation experience, youth will explore their faith that has been passed down to them, ask tough questions about our Christian history and Sacred Scriptures, and ultimately grow closer in their own, unique relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

Second, Confirmation is an event where our youth will officially confirm their intention to live out the vows of the baptismal covenant that have been instilled in them as children as they respond to the grace that God has already given them, and boldly proclaim their faith in God the Creator, Son, and Holy Spirit, in the presence of fellow believers. Upon completion of Confirmation, youth are invited to become official members of the United Methodist Church, and members of the local Church: First Methodist Sherman.

When: Class for the confirmation class of 2025 will be starting in the fall, contact Laura for more information.

Where: Conference Room at the church

Why: Why do we do Confirmation? In the United Methodist Church, we deeply believe that one’s faith is both personal and communal. God calls us to grow deeper in our faith as followers of Christ through prayer and studying Scripture, but we are also called to do this in community with others, through worship, study, and service. Through Confirmation, our children are given the space to think deeply and ask questions about their unique faith by digging into our United Methodist Theology, learning about our Christian heritage, and exploring what it means, to them, to not only believe in Christ but to be a follower of Christ. By the end of the Confirmation experience, it is our hope that our youth have a strong foundation of faith upon which to build for the rest of their lives.

Why is it important? Confirmation is about the gift God has given us through Jesus in our baptism. It is about how God has loved us, and what we are called to do to accept God’s gift and make this life of faith our very own. Going through Confirmation means our youth are no longer children. They are becoming youth - working toward becoming adults and accepting responsibility for their own faith journey. While parents and their church family will always be there to support these youth on this faith journey, now there is more responsibility on the Confirmands to explore, experience, and learn about their faith from their own desire to do so for the rest of their lives.

Youth Parents Information

We want every parent to know that your student’s spiritual growth is our top priority at First Methodist Sherman. We take great steps to ensure a safe, secure environment, where students may discover the truth in Jesus Christ. Our hope is that they connect and grow deeper in their walk with Christ. There are many ways you as a parent can get involved in supporting the spiritual growth of your student each week. There is no more important work than that of raising up committed, bold student leaders of the faith and you are critical in that equation. Please begin by spending a moment each day in prayer for this ministry. Contact the Youth Ministries office if you have any questions, or are considering volunteering to change the life of young people for Jesus!

Resources

We know it can be tough raising a teenager, so we wanted to offer some resources to help.

The Center for Parent/Youth Understanding is a nonprofit organization committed to building strong families by serving to bridge the cultural-generational gap between parents and teenagers. At a time when an already confusing youth culture is changing quickly, CPYU helps parents, youth workers, educators and others understand teenagers and their culture so that they will be better equipped to help children and teens navigate the challenging world of adolescence.
